The Seclab Hacking Club


Critical hands-on security skills are difficult to gain. It often requires significant dedication and handholding. The philosephy behind this hacking club is to balance the efforts required to build critical security skills while making the process fun and a bit more scalable. The Seclab Hacking Club is a casual by-weekly event, led by folks at Seclab, to practice fundamental systems security concepts in a hands-on fashion. The goal is to augment cybersecurity training with offensive security modules allowing folks to learn security by breaking systems :D.

The Seclab Hacking Club has been created by Dr. Amin Kharraz and his team at Florida International University as a security education project. Participation in the events is open to everyone. Feel free to join us by-weekly, see some cool security challenges, and solve them together. Please send us an email to add you to the slack channel and the email list. The challenges for the events are loaded into the central CTF servers managed by SecLab. So, the only thing you need to bring with you is just a laptop. Who can attend?

The events are free and open to everyone -- FIU and non-FIU folks can join the live sessions. To start, it would be good to review the documents we shared here. The documents will provide basic ideas on what kind of problems we solve every week and what you should be prepared for. Coming prepared to discuss ideas is definately helpful. If you would like to enroll in cybersecurity class at FIU that revolves around these topics, there are two options. Software Security and Vulnerabilities (CEN5079) or Applied Security (CNT 5415) offered by Dr. Kharraz are two courses that focus on offensive security. Take a look at the syllabus and see if you want to be challenged ;-).
